Are You a Leader of your Money?

As women, we are often leaders in many areas in our lives, including home care, children, and aging parents. Each of these categories has other sub-categories, such as food planning, shopping and preparation, home decorating and maintenance, along with numerous other areas. I hear from some women that they just don’t have time to be involved with growing their money. I would like to invite you to take a leadership role with your money if you are not already. Let’s look at some of the habits of leadership. Leaders learn enough to lead. They don’t learn it all, but they learn enough … [Read more...]

5 Days Is All It Took….

Last week I had a golf breakthrough! When I’m at my mom’s, it’s easy to play a few holes of golf each day, whereas in Austin, I usually slip in a game a week. Improvement is slow, trust me! I have noticed that for the past 2 summers, this daily focus has really improved my results, and this year was no different; I excitedly reported to my mom that I felt like I had experienced a “golf breakthrough”. Then I thought about how this principle can be applied to any area of our lives. It’s the “what you focus on grows” theory. This is the updated and trendier version of “practice … [Read more...]

Tips from Vanguard on Bubbles (NOT the fun kind!)

Vanguard published a great article on investment bubbles. As a provider of financial education, I constantly hear from women that they have fear around losing their money. Research shows that financial security is a top priority when it comes to women and investing; not that we need the research to know that, right, girlfriends?  Understanding bubbles helps you to avoid them, and thus, lower your investment risk. Remember, knowledge is what makes you feel more financially secure. When you know about something, it just feels safer, and you make better choices. This is true for investment … [Read more...]

Don’t Be Penny Wise and Pound Foolish

Some people say to watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves. I say watch the dollars and the pennies will take care of themselves. By focusing on the big picture first, such as knowing your monthly money flow and knowing why you want money, your intentions will trickle down to your every day spending, almost on an unconscious level. Let me give you an example. If you have decided that you are going to reduce your spending so you put aside more money to invest based on your big money goals and your current money flow, you don’t have to agonize when you see the black … [Read more...]

Investing Insights Gained from AWC

As a money coach, I have learned that most life lessons are also investing lessons, and I am always interested in seeing how the two intertwine.  Recently, I attended the Austin Women in Communication luncheon where life lessons were abundant, as savvy entrepreneurs Melinda Garvey, co-founder of Austin Woman magazine, Lorie Marrero, founder of Clutter Diet and Patti DeNucci (who I keep bumping into!), founder of DeNucci and Company were interviewed about overcoming fear. Let me share a few insights I gained from these remarkable women over the next few articles and how they relate to … [Read more...]

Women and Investing Aha Moment

Recently I had an "aha" insight about women and investing when I had the oil changed in my car. The only reason I brought myself to finally have it done was because I was driving to Houston the next day with my sons, and I wanted everyone to be safe. While I was at the car service shop, I looked at my tires and noticed that they needed to be immediately replaced, which was a major inconvenience to get done before travel the next day. Always analyzing my behavior with the hope of improving it, I realized that I don’t take care of my car in a timely and better manner because I never learned … [Read more...]

Is Your Investing Like This Ladybug?

Does investing risk keep you stuck in the same place instead of moving toward your money goals? Last week I noticed this cute lady bug when I was on my morning walk; two days later, I was surprised to see that she was in the same spot! Do you ever feel that your money is in the same spot that it has been in for a long time? There are two common reasons for money to be stuck in the same place. First, investing risk keeps many people from ever taking the necessary action to actually invest their money. The thought of losing their money keeps them from taking that next step, whether this is to … [Read more...]

Does the Word Investor Feel Scary?

Do you think of yourself as an investor? In considering names for an investing course I have been writing recently, it occurred to me that most women don’t think of themselves as investors based on what they've been telling me when I have money conversations with them. I think to feel comfortable calling yourself an investor you have to actually be involved with investing with your money, and even then, it may feel awkward. Somehow I think the word investor seems big and intimidating for a lot of people, especially for women. It seems like there is almost shame around it. I understand; It … [Read more...]

Lunch Atop the World Trade Center

In 1998 my mother and I saw Maria Bartiromo on the packed floor of the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) on a trip to New York City to celebrate my mom's birthday. We had lunch on top of the World Trade Center afterward, and I recall that my mother had California Rolls for the first time. What a wonderful memory I have whenever I see Maria! Here is a great article by Maria from the CNBC that offers long term perspective, which is so important for investors to have. She is beautiful in person as well as brilliant. What an excellent example of a financial woman! Here is an exert from her article … [Read more...]
